  1. Hello Fellow DVDR enthusists,

I am at my wits end with the NTSC version of The Seven Samurai, a 3 hour classic Japanese movie. Subtitles are necessary as the audio stream is Japanese and re-encoding is necessary as the movie is 6 gb in size

I tried two different subtitle ripping methods. I first used DVD2DVDR to get the AC3 and M2V that was run through CCE. The subtitles that DVD2DVDR produces can not be used in Maestro, so...

(attempt1) I used SubRipper to OCR the subtitles from the IFO/VOBs, then another little app to convert it to Maestro format. I authored, burnt and the audio/video is very good (not bad for 3+hours on 1 dvdr!!) but the subtitles were FAST. Way ahead of the movie. They started out in sync, but by the end of the movie they were minutes ahead.

(attempt2) I used SubRip to rip the subtitles to BMP and I followed the doom9 guide that has you run pulldown twice. Again, I seemed to get a good author and I'm even learning how to add buttons and make them do things. Alas, this time the subtitles were BEHIND at the end. Fine at the beginning but at the end of the movie they were lagging 10 seconds behind.

So. What "guide" or method should I use? I even had to check my original dvd to make sure that the subtitles were in sync, and of course they are. Does anyone know (1) what I might be doing wrong? (2) or is there a subtitle application that can read a subtitle file and stretch or shrink it by X seconds?

Please help, I'm going crazy. Thanks!!

  2. Why don't you just split it to 2 disks ... You can save a lot of you time that you will spend on how to do it your way

  3. If you find an answer for those subtitles... tell me... cuz I'm going through hell trying to sync mine on Maestro... it's 7 seconds behind... and no matter how I rip them -- it's still 7 seconds behind... subs are hell in Maestro..

I fall into the category of "I just don't want it on two discs", so it's not an option. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

  7. I finally bought this movie, and I wanted to back it up as well, since it cost me 29 bucks! But then I see that the subtitles are going to cause a huge problem, so I'm not going to bother with it.

I was trying to see if maybe there was a method where the subtitles could be permanently turned on and burned into the video, but I haven't found anything. Anyone know how to do this?

  8. It seems that there are a LOT of subtitle related questions coming up. What is the best method for authoring a re-encoded dvd with subtitles? Is maestro bad?
